Carbonized Bamboo Flooring

Many people are starting to consider using carbonized bamboo flooring. However, there are also some people who thought that they were deceived, because the carbonized bamboo flooring wasn’t as tough as they’d like to be. Is it true? This article will provide you detailed information about this product, including their pros and cons.
The reason why some people are upset after they purchase the product is a misunderstanding. Some thought that carbonized bamboo flooring will be stronger and more durable compared to the regular bamboo flooring. After all, there’s “carbon” in the name, right? Well, this is a wrong assumption, because the carbonization process in bamboo flooring aims to give the deep, rich color to the material. In fact, carbonized bamboo is usually softer compared to regular bamboo, because the process usually involves boiling or steaming the bamboo. Using the heat, the ‘sugar’ of the bamboo got caramelized, resulting in dark brown color. Fortunately recent technology have allowed manufacturers to treat the surface with aluminum oxide finish, adding strength to it, allowing the carbonized bamboo to be used with normal wear.

Carbonized Bamboo Flooring Pros and Cons

Now that you’ve understand more about this product, what are the carbonized bamboo flooring pros and cons?
Pros / Advantages

  • Strength and durability

Bamboo in general is considerably strong, but under one condition. The bamboo has to be allowed to mature for at least six years before harvested. Therefore, make sure you ask the manufacturer about the age of the bamboo. Usually old bamboo can be as strong as hardwood! That is, of course, possible with proper care.

  • Easy care, stylish, versatile

Carbonized bamboo flooring’s color can be engineered. This is why you can adjust the color to your style. The maintenance is fairly easy with occasional polish. It is perfect for rooms with moisture like basement or bathroom. On the other hand, you should avoid using the flooring outdoor, because bamboo won’t last long with prolonged heat.

  • Environmentally friendly

If you are conscious about saving the earth, but still want that wooden look on your floor, you definitely should buy this product. Bamboo mature very fast compared to hardwood, therefore it is very eco-friendly. However, you should also ask the seller about the whole process. There are some companies that don’t apply the environmentally friendly code of ethics. Always choose the ones that are produced by environmentally friendly process.

Cons / Disadvantages
As we have mentioned earlier, the carbonized bamboo is generally softer than regular bamboo. The price might also not as cheap as regular bamboo flooring, because there are additional production process like the carbonization and the aluminum oxide finish.
Although it is possible, we cannot recommend you to buy regular bamboo flooring and then carbonize it yourselves. Carbonized bamboo flooring without that aluminum oxide finish will make the bamboo dent and scratch easily, and the DIY carbonization will shorten the span of the bamboo flooring.
So that is our version of carbonized bamboo flooring pros and cons. We admit that the carbonized ones are more stylish compared to the regular bamboo, but you should prepare for a little bit of extra work.
